The eye

The eye is typical component of a number of compound symbols that appeared ages ago and exist till nowadays. There are also a number of symbols that was created recently and those symbols also contain a symbol of eye. The ancient people recognised an eye as a symbol of acumen and provided that symbol with a number of mystical features. The eyes in the culture of ancient people are the object of rather important meaning. The eye was a symbol of wisdom and energy, of creation and destruction.

There were cultures in the ancient world that recognised a sun as an eye of the sky. The same true for the moon, though a sun was a good eye of the sky and the moon was a bad eye. People believed that sun brings warm and life to the earth and destroys the darkness they were afraid of. Though, the moon was considered as evil eye of night that watch those who are helpless and than destroys them or cause certain troubles. That thought was weighted by facts of sleepwalking.

The eye has always been a symbol of protection and so there are a number of amulets with eyes depicted on those. According to legends of ancient people there were gods that were able to destroy there enemies and those who run counter them with a single eye-look. A number of ancient gods were provided with the power of eye-look. Those eye-looks were of different kinds. Some of gods were able to cure people or even to resurrect those with their eye-look, but some of those used their eye-look as deadly weapon against people.

Let's not forget about the mythic creature the Gorgon that was an invincible creature thanks to her eyes. The Gorgon was provided with a power to turn people into stones once they look in her eyes. There was only one hero who managed to kill it and the gorgon was killed with her own eye-look. Though, the gorgon is not the only mythic creature through image of which we are able to assure that ancient people provided eyes with mystical power and meaning.

According to myth of Hinduism Krishna created the world and gave birth for all living creatures by his look. So, you see that the symbol of eye is a symbol of live and prosperity, though there is another example that is an argument in weight that the image of eye wasn't only a symbol of life. So, according to Sumerian mythology there eye was a symbol of death.

As you can see the symbol of eye just like the other symbols is a symbol of a variety of meanings. Those meanings and their peculiarities depend on the culture the image of eye represented at. There are no two different cultures that will provide this symbol with similar meaning, though there is a feature common for all cultures – the power the eye provided with.
