Pentagram

The pentagram is one of the most mystic symbols that are provided with features of dark magic. Most people believe that a pentagram is a sign of devil and a symbol of dark magic and a darkness that destroys the light. Though, that though is a wrong one as a pentagram belongs to group of ancient symbols and the etymology of its meaning is rather broad one. The history of pentagram begins at the ages of ancient Greece where a pentagram was considered as an amulet or a symbol of god.

The name "pentagram" is translated as five-pointed and it describes the image of pentagram. The pentagram is a five-pointed star with one point at the top. The pentagram people consider as the demonic one is the same five-pointed star but with two points at the top. It is so called flipped pentagram, and that is the pentagram which is a symbol of darkness and black magic.

According to beliefs of ancient Greeks the pentagram is a symbol of god and sacred star. According to beliefs of ancient Egyptians the pentagram inscribed into a circle is a symbol of Erebus. The Erebus was a place where the souls of dead people went to, and the five-pointed star inscribed into circle was a symbol of that world. The pentagram was also considered as an amulet against evil spirits as the number of its points is coded information and decoded as a number of the love – the most powerful feeling. 2 is a number of woman and 3 is a number of man and gathered together they form the power of love.

Different religions provide the pentagram with different meaning and those meaning are extremely different. So, for Christianity the pentagram is a symbol of five wounds on the Jesus' body, the wounds that were caused him with nails as he was sentenced to crucifixion. Five points of pentagram are the five stigmata that are the symbol of sacred wounds Jesus underwent as he atoned for sins of humans. Though that meaning of pentagram soon was neglected and nowadays Christianity recognises the pentagram as a symbol of dark magic and devil.

The Jews recognised a pentagram as a symbol of the Pentateuch - the first five books of the Old Testament regarded as a unity. Each point of pentagram is a symbol of certain book of Pentateuch and the unity of those books forms the Old Testament just like five points form the star. So, according to that theory one may state that a pentagram is a symbol of Old Testament for Jews.

The pentagram may be not only a symbol but also a sigil. The Arabian occultists used the sigil of Pentagram to perform certain ceremonies or to create some kinds of curses. As you can see the pentagram is rather ancient symbol and that is the reason why it was adopted by a number of cultures and nations. Each nation that has adopted the pentagram provided its symbol with certain features and meanings peculiar only for their culture and some cultures has even changed the nature of pentagram and turned it to sigil from symbol.
