It is not a symbol but a sign wide-known as a number of a beast. That sign is typical for those religions the belief of which stipulates the belief in God and devil. The teaching of those religions say that the world is a battlefield of good and evil and that the battle is lasting from the very beginning of world's existence and will last till the day the God will come and perform a great judgement. There are no concrete words about the beast and the 666 as Islam proclaim the belief in prophet but not in God. Though, there are words in Koran according to which the lying prophet will come in order to confuse people and to avoid them follow the Allah. People will be able to recognise him as he will have the word "faithless" on his forehead. If one tale a good look at that world written in Arabian he or she will notice the 666 in this word.

One way or another, though the power of the 666 number consists in our fear fro it. Those who profess Satanism use this figure together with inversed cross and pentagram, though it doesn't mean that a cross and pentagram are demonic symbols. People themselves provide different signs and figures with frightening meanings and that get scared with a single look to those.
